Our specialized team at Johns Hopkins consists of pediatric radiologists, pediatric radiologic technologists, pediatric nurses, pediatric anesthesiologists and a child life specialist. We understand that children are not small adults and need care specifically designed just for them. We partner with your family to ensure your child’s care is delivered in a way that is precise, easy to understand and minimizes fear. We deliver world-class patient care by working closely with your child’s doctors to develop a comprehensive care plan.

Patient Care

Our team is dedicated to providing a safe, comfortable and friendly environment for children and their families.

One way we help children prepare for radiology exams is by using a pretend MRI scanner to practice for the real exam. This looks and feels just like a real MRI machine and allows our child life specialist to help kids prepare for the exam. When it is time for the real exam, the experience feels familiar and less overwhelming.

Our team has developed pediatric-specific low-radiation techniques for children in computed tomography (CT), X-ray and fluoroscopy. Whenever possible, we use non-radiation imaging modalities like ultrasound and MRI.

Meet Our Child Life Specialist

Child life specialists are specifically trained to provide the unique care and support that children and their families may need as they navigate the health care system. They are invaluable in helping children and their families cope with their illness and hospital course as they get treated.  

Mollie Young, our department’s child life specialist, is available to answer your questions about imaging procedures. She facilitates evidence-based, developmentally appropriate interventions such therapeutic play and psychological preparation to help children of all ages participate in their care. Whether your child needs a VCUG, CT, or an MIBG, Mollie is here to make sure children’s care is delivered in a way your child can understand, minimizing their fears and encouraging their involvement and providing a child-friendly environment. Her goal is to partner with your family to provide psychological preparation, promote effective coping and alleviate anxiety.

This coloring book was created by the pediatric radiology team at Johns Hopkins to help prepare children and their families for a variety of imaging exams and to get them excited about the pictures that are about to be taken of the inside of their bodies. You’ll find cartoons to color, areas to draw your own pictures, brain puzzles to solve and even a whole page dedicated to getting autographs. We hope you find this activity book to be lots of fun!
