Background

Dr. Thompson specializes in interventional cardiology at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. He joined the hospital staff in 2020.

He was previously a pediatric cardiologist and medical director for Child Cardiology Associates in Fairfax, Virginia, and chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology of the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

He earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency, serving as chief resident, at Children’s National Medical Center. He then completed a pediatric cardiology fellowship with a focus in catheterization and interventional cardiology at University of California, San Francisco.

He has been a principal investigator for multiple clinical trials for devices to close defects in the heart through catheters rather than open-heart surgery. He has performed device closures of over 1,500 defects. He was the first physician in the United States to use a novel transcatheter suture delivery system and is leading a multicenter, multinational trial on that device. His passion is the delivery of compassionate care to his patients and their families.
