Volunteers

Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center is proud of its active volunteers who can be found assisting departments throughout the hospital and in our community programs. Our volunteers are a team of caring, enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who go a long way in helping the hospital achieve its mission. Ages 15 and up!

Our volunteers are a key part of the hospital's success - visiting patients, assisting family members, working with hospital staff and in community positions supporting health promotion events and the Cancer Resource Center. Whether taking magazines and books to patients, staffing the hospital’s gift shop, helping visitors find their way, or aiding a staff member with paperwork, our volunteers are an integral part of our care team, providing hope and cheer to staff, patients and the community.

Due to the high volume of new applicants and existing volunteers, we are currently not accepting new volunteer applications other than for the specific positions listed below. Thank you for your consideration and support of Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center.

Korean Speakers

To improve the patient experience for those in our community, we are searching for volunteers who can fluently speak the Korean language. This will include checking in with patients within the Korean population to ensure their needs and expectations are met. Hours can be flexible.

Animal Assisted Therapy Teams

We are currently accepting new therapy animal teams who are verified through Pet Partners and Capital National Therapy Dogs. In order to qualify for this position, you must have an established therapy dog that can visit the hospital with you. Hours can be flexible.

Gift Shop

The Gift Shop is currently looking for volunteers to assist with daily operations that include the operation of the cash register, restocking of inventory, greeting customers, maintaining cleanliness, delivering flower orders to patient rooms, pricing merchandise, and inflating helium balloons.  There are weekday shifts available from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m.-4 p.m.

Musicians

Calling all musicians! We are seeking volunteers who play a musical instrument to play in our hospital lobby for patients and staff. Hours can be flexible.

Materials Management

The Materials Management department is looking for a volunteer who is available to clean and dust inventory bins throughout all units in the hospital. Hours can be flexible anytime between Monday through Friday 10a-4p.

Infection Control

The Infection Control team is looking for volunteers to assist with handwashing audits throughout the hospital units. You are given an Ipad as well as training on how to log the audits in each unit. It is not a secret that you are completing these audits so everyone is aware you are there. Hours for this position can be flexible anytime Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Volunteer Requirements

To volunteer at JHHCMC, you must be age 15 or older. Volunteers must commit to at least four hours of service per week (or a minimum of 100 hours).

All applicants must:

  • Submit an online volunteer application to begin the interview/selection process.
  • Receive clearance from Occupational Health Services by showing proof of tuberculosis testing, immunizations/titers (MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, COVID, and a flu vaccine during the season), and urine drug screening before volunteering.
  • Complete virtual Volunteer Services Orientation and follow up paperwork
  • Complete a background check if age 18 or over.
  • Comply with the JHHCMC annual flu campaign if volunteering in-person in the hospital.

    Members of this advisory council discuss critical operational decisions related to how Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center can provide care in the most compassionate and empathetic manner, while ensuring that we are employing the best safety and care techniques.
